DDCinema is a new way
of distribution
The recent popularity of electronic and digital cinema has produced a demand for events that may be alternative to motion pictures but equally interesting for movie theatres; events that may put to good use the new technology and its numerous features. This innovative way of supplying and distributing events to movie theatres is an important turning point both for audiences and for producers of contents other than movies. With the advent of High Definition, in fact, cultural programmes such as operas, plays, recitals by famous singers or performers, documentaries and films by independent filmmakers can now be produced for screening in movie theatres - all events that would otherwise never reach such wide audiences.
The new Protagonists.
The distribution of alternative events to movie theatres sees the rise of new protagonists. Opera houses and playhouses all over the world are interested in promoting their productions through these venues, which have so far been alien to the programming of operas, plays or concerts. Just imagine the audience of a Beijing movie theatre enjoying Italian opera staged in one of the many historical theatres of the peninsula, or in the splendid frame of Verona's Arena. Or a European viewer watching, in a movie theatre or on a cruise ship.

Digital Movie Theatres in the world From a recent study of Mediasalles, Digital Movie Theatres in the world are growing at an exponential rate. The following table refers to movie theatres equipped with the digital technology (1,3-2K) DLP Cinema. No data is available, instead, regarding the theatres equipped with Electronic Cinema, which can equally benefit from the offer of alternative contents.
- Africa 2
- Asia 347
- Europe 531
- Latin America 21
- North America 1957
- Oceania 8
DDCinema initially plans to offer about 10/12 recorded events per year, meaning lyrical operas produced and filmed in HD in the most important European opera houses. We also envision, in the course of a year, two to three live events, broadcast by satellite directly to movie theatres. This will enable the owners of movie theatres to plan a season attracting a whole new range of clientele, eventually widening their offer to titles such as documentaries, live pop music events from European stages, and digital movies produced in emerging markets.
DDCinema will, furthermore, favour the cultural exchange between Europe and Asia, the two markets most interested in the distribution and commercial exchange of movies and alternative contents. At the moment, in the UK alone, there are an estimate of 202 digital movie theatres (i.e. those equipped with DLP technology, although there are just as many equipped with Electronic Cinema); while in the entire Asian continent there are 347.
The production of digital movies has also seen a constant growth; as has the interest, in Europe, for movies produced in the Eastern world. All of this gives and idea of the potential of DDCinema. |
